It’s mama’s birthday today. No time to fret over not fitting in or playing second fiddle to a cell phone. I have three beautiful girls.Last night I heard Finley’s laugh for the first time and it was pure magic.Coffee was waiting for me this am.I am married to my best friend (and resident coffee maker and deliverer of lattes and designs.)I love my job.It’s sunny.My house is clean. Today I am 35 and happy. Happy sigh.

Happily Ever After

“Mama, you’re going to live happily ever after,” Avery said with a toothy grin. “I know? But do you know why?” I asked, grinning right back. She looked at me expectantly and then turned to Sean when he said, “We’ll live happily ever after because you are our happy endings.” “Mommy and Daddy fell in love and because of that, we got to have you,” I chirped. “Yep, your mommy is my princess,” Sean said. “And Daddy, you’re the queen!”

Waking up to yesterday

I poked my head through the door this morning, intending just to peek, but feeling the morning air I had to step outside. Beyond our threshold I visited the past. The air was cool, damp even. The light had the calmer, weightier feel of a late August morning, there was a scent of endings. I padded to the edge of the porch and felt the cool planks beneath my bare feet, the morning air crept beneath my shirt and I drew a deep breath. It was 9 years earlier, before kids, before New York. Rear View Mirror Confessions

After Briar was born I rigged both visors and the rear view mirror so that I could see her. Three different angles, if I could have figured out a fourth I would have done it. When Avery came along, and then Fin, there was even more to watch. The other day, I was driving and as I looked in the rear view mirror I saw something different. There were no little girls in the back seat, no husband sitting next to me. I smiled at my reflection, not out of relief to be alone, rather it was just having the freedom to simply examine my crow’s feet.
