Right there with you, sweet lady. What do we want our lives to be? THEIR memories to be? I feel it crashing down on me, with one of mine leaving this year for college, the other leaving in two years... THERE CAN BE NO lost time!

Yes, the mind that churns and churns, that holds on for dear life- I know exactly what you mean here. I also treasure those moments with my children when I am able to completely let go. I only wish I would allow myself more of them.

I feel every bit of this. I'm writing a series right now that will go on a year (for The Jewish Daily Forward) about trying to cut my iphone time in half by next spring. It is REALLY REALLY REALLY hard. I think I am truly addicted to it. I have written some posts on my attempts. It's probably time I start exploring why I find it SO hard.

I think for me the key is going to be recognizing when it does happen and trying to preserve the feeling. Certainly knowing that I can access that completely buffered place gives me confidence that I can do it again.

I took all three girls to the elementary school to deliver the cupcakes for Ave's birthday. We didn't rush and it was amazing. Rode into work on a cloud of joy.

Amanda,
I read this yesterday afternoon right after you posted it. As I started to comment, my youngest came through the room with sidewalk chalk headed out to the front yard. She was elated when I set down my laptop and jumped up to follow her. I wouldn't have "let go" if I hadn't read your post first. She and I thank you for that.

Amanda,
I just adore this. Because I've been noticing the rising tide of pressure to unplug in a formal way - which, as you note, frankly doesn't fix my own hamster mind. Because I've see the delight that boxes can bring to my children. And, most of all, because I'm so familiar with that sacredness that can suddenly descend, into the most ordinary moments, when I just allow it. I haven't figured out what the formula is for that allowing, nor for that holiness, so I'm just trying to allow it when I can. xoxo

I'll make you a shield out of cardboard, then. Seems like that might just work to block out the bad.
